"I don't seem to actually have
any recollection whatsoever of the Alamo..."

Hello fellow music enthusiasts,
I like to say what I have to say in the musical dialect as a rule but
here at the Tiki Bar, I'll make an exorcism...er, uh, ...exception.
I penned "Road Trip" and "Mambo Samba" off our latest CD.
And I enjoy both the live performances and the recording
process.
It's hard to believe that we have been making music together for 15 years, but we have. And we are threatening to go on about it for another 15 years until we get it right!
Ha!

  1. Here is a nice map of Tortola , British Virgin Islands (One of my favorite places).
  2. Bomba's Shack -Bomba built his now world famous shack on the beach in Cappoons Bay, beside Apple Bay in Tortola in 1976. He did not have a lot of money for building supplies, so he used driftwood, pieces of tin roofing, broken surf boardsand anything else that happened to wash upon the beach or he was able to find. The end result is a distinctly eclectic, ever changing, collage of debris which lends itself well somehow to the decor. Bomba's Shack promptly became a popular hangout for surfers and hosts numerous surfingcompetitions. In 1989, he began hosting full moon parties, atradition which continues today. Much like an island style tailgateparty, the full moon party takes place on the road between Bomba's twobuildings and affords one an excellent opportunity for people watching, limin' and generally having a great time!
And just what is "bomba"? The definition of Bomba: An Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance form dating back to the 17th century.

Recipe Of The Month

Mango Chutney

Ingredients

4 pounds fresh mangos, ripe but not too soft, peeled
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon chile flakes
2 1/2 cups medium dice red onion
1/4 cup minced fresh ginger
1 cup small dice red bell pepper ,
 8 ounces unsweetened pineapple juice
4 ounces cider vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons curry powder
Kosher salt and fresh ground white pepper
1/2 cup raisins or golden raisins
1/2 cup toasted, roughly chopped macadamia nuts

Cut the mango flesh away from the pit. The pit is shaped similar to anobelisk, so you'll end up with 2 large pieces and 2 smaller pieces fromeach mango. Roughly chop the flesh.

In a saute pan heat the oil and add the chile flakes. Be careful not to burn the chile, just toast itto flavor the oil. Add the onions and sweat until soft. Add the gingerand bell pepper and saute for 1 to 2 minutes. Finally add the mango andcook for 1 more minute.

In a separate bowl, combine the pineapple juice, vinegar, sugar, and curry powder. Add this mixture to the pan. Stir to combine.Bring the mixture to a bare simmer and reduce for about 30 minutes, stirring frequently. Season with salt and pepper. Add the raisins andthe nuts and transfer to another container over an ice bath. I used amild yellow curry powder, but if you want it hotter use red ones.

"When the ancient wall sculptors were finished, it was a relief."

For some people, puns are like dairy products,
the cheesier the better .
When they think of one, they tend to milk it for all it's worth.
Personally, I don't think they're Gouda enough,
but we must find a whey to skim off the butter ones.
I cheddar to think what Face might come up with... I tell ya' ice cream out loud sometimes.
I'm Dave, I sing and play guitar, sometimes whipping out the ol' blues harp for a tuna or 2 just for the halibut.  I wrote Not The Way Home on our latest Cd.

Do bakers with a sense of humor bake wry bread?

Home is where the art is.
I believe a man's home is his castle, in a manor of speaking.

The Grapes Of Wrath is an epic commentary on social injustice
but the wrath of grapes is a hangover.

How many existentialists does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two.
One to change the lightbulb and one to observe how the lightbulb symbolizes
a beacon of subjectivity in a bleak netherworld of Cosmic Nothingness.

The economy is getting tough don't you think?
People are telling their kids the garage
is pretty much just like Disneyland and vacationing  at home.
Last time I gassed up, they took Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Amex.
And didn't give them back!

Capitalism generally means that everything is to be sold.
The "new" version seems to have misunderstood this to mean
everything is to be bought.

The advantage to being an economist is that you
know why you are standing in the unemployment line.

Which reminds me of a story....
A mathematician, an accountant, and an economist are applying for the same job.
An interviewer calls in the mathematician and asks "What do two plus two equal?"
The mathematician replies "Four." The interviewer asks "Four, exactly?"
The mathematician looks at the interviewer incredulously and says "Yes, four, exactly."
Then the interviewer calls in the accountant and asks the same question "What do two plus two equal?" The accountant says "On average, four - give or take ten percent, but on average, four." Then the interviewer calls in the economist and poses the same question "What do two plus two equal?" The economist gets up, locks the door, closes the shade, sits down next to the interviewer
... and says "What do you want it to equal?"

Karl Marx's grave is obviously a communist plot!

We often hear of Deja vu, but seldom about Deja Moo,
which is the feeling that you've heard this bull before.

If electricity comes from electrons... morality comes from morons.
Einstein is not dead,
but has achieved maximum entropy.

Do you like Eastwood?
I'm a huge fan of Western movies,

even the poor ones have merit in my eyes.
And just last January I was in a western bar while visiting
Tucson Arizona when this 3 legged dog walked in and said to the bartender
"I'm lookin' for the man that shot my paw".

Then a cowboy who just finished a cattle drive came in and said
he used to have 196 heads of cattle but now that he rounded them up he has 200.

If I don't pay the exorcist will I be repossessed?

On the subject of music, well, it is my life and
I call myself a musician and composer. I've written most of the tunes on the Mighty Parrot Cds.
And managed to make a living all my life through my music, my wits, and a little luck.
I was a session musician in Philadelphia and New York in the early days of my music career.
In that regard I worked with many excellent musicians in diverse genres such as Bill Withers,
Boz Scaggs, and Joan Jett. In those days, I fear I did not fully appreciate my own circumstances.
Although I learned a great deal from everyone I ever worked with, I did not live in the moment, but thought (like in the song) "those days would never end". But they did. May they rest in peace.

I am not at ease unless there is an instrument in my hands.
Aside from the Mighty Parrot Band
I am the music editor at DC magazine (Duly Consider).
It's an interesting review and opinion forum published by Bryan E. Hall out of Atlanta.

Read my Column at Duly Consider by clicking here.

If you enjoy it, click on "older posts" at the end the articles,
many of those older pieces are my personal favorites.

My musical influences are many,
I love Reggae and Afro Caribbean, but have a soft spot for "art rock"
like Gentle Giant, King Crimson,
Peter Gabriel,

Frank Zappa, Porcupine Tree, etc.
Players who have become true masters of their instruments
regardless of their genre always intrigue and inform.
People like Al DiMeola , Bela Fleck , Chet Atkins, Percy Jones ,
Eric Johnson, Alan Holdsworth ,
Jerry Douglass, Stanley Clarke, to name a few.
I also really like artful pop music such as Paul Simon, 10cc, XTC, U2, Coldplay, etc.
The Beatles, Ten Years After, and particularly The Who were early influences.
In fact I believe Quadraphenia should be on everyone's "desert island" list.
Along with The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway,
Your choice of recording of the Rite Of Spring ,
( I like the 1958 Bernstein version)
And at least one King Crimson selection,
(I might recommend Discipline ).

For electric guitarists, the guitar and the amp both have quite an impact on one's personal sound or voice
I am a fan of and use Vox amplifiers for their highly regarded musical voice.
Hand wired models with quality Celestion speakers are still available.

I like Vox Amplification

One of my guitars is a thoroughly precise copy of a 1959 Telecaster
With a genuine Bixby tailpiece. I contracted the Fender Custom Shop to reproduce this guitar for me and I must say they did a fantastic job. Kudos to the Fender custom guitar shop!

Bigsby Vibratos rule,
when you get a good feel for them they add rather than subtract to a guitar's tone.
Though not the preferred implement for dive bombs, it does most anything else quite well.
Accept no substitutes!

Bigsby Vibrato

The classical guitar you hear on my CDs and the Mighty Parrot CDs
is made by Canadian Luthier Robert Godin.
Godin began reproducing his designs at a small family run business
in La Patrie, Quebec in 1984. The company has grown quite a bit now,
but most musicians agree they turn out a quality instrument.
Guitarists who use Godin instruments include
John McLaughlin, Daryl Stuermer, Steve Stevens, Habib Koité,
Rumesh De Mel, Hiran and
Vinnie Moore.
They are also common among session players and sidemen.
Robert Godin was the  mentor of master
luthier Mauro Liberatore.

Godin Guitars
(Good Stuff)

For most of the Mighty Parrot Band work I use an Archtop guitar.
Different guitars have different voices, and excel at different things.
Guitars with bolt on necks ala Strats and Teles have a wonderful
"stringiness" in their sound and single coil pickups actually reproduce
a wider spectrum of frequencies than humbuckers, which brings out stringiness.
Guitars with "neck throughs"
or glued in necks tend to pick up more body resonance and sound "woody".
In the band, by combining the classic guitar tones of Fenders, Gibson Les Pauls,
and the unique voice of the archtop,
we try to offer a cornucopia of classic tones in the hope
that there is no saturation of a single guitar sound.

I like Gretsch Guitars

As with all guitar makers these days, the low end is the low end.
Don't think because you played an "electromatic" that you played a Gretsch.
(No more than a Squire is like an American Strat
or an Epiphone knockoff is like a Les Paul Custom.
Yes it looks similar, but that's about where the resemblance ends.)

In the 50's and 60's Gretsch guitars were a premiere guitar company.
The family run company for 3 generations was bought by Baldwin in 1967.
Baldwin ran the company aground.
Gretsch guitars ceased production in 1981
But in 1989, the Grandson of Fred Gretsch, also named Fred Gretsch
managed to resurrect the company from the ashes.
He dreamed of seeing the family's musical instruments restored to their original prestige.
Today Gretsch guitars are owned by the Gretsch family again. They have partnered with Fender
for manufacturing and distribution.

My Guitar Links
  1. Here is a humorous but provocative discussion of thumb placement, My personal view is that for most types of playing the fingers do need to be arched, as described in the method books. This facilitates clean chords and melody notes. However, that being said, every rule is made to be broken is it not? The "baseball bat" grip facilitates string bends, wide vibrato, bass string thumb mutes, or even as Hendrix demonstrated, actual notes. Basically I think good technique requires the ability to do both well.

If fasting is going without eating, why is there fast food?

Did you know the bartender here at the Tiki Bar used to be a bailiff?
Well, he serves Subpoena Coladas!
My bandmates who play guitar are too nervous.
They are always fretting about something!
Ever since my mail man had all the digits amputated from his feet, I find him very annoying.
I think I might be lack-toes intolerant.

I like Ampeg for Bass Amplification.
8 10 inch speakers and tubes make "the sound".

Among the interesting Basses I own, I like my Music Man pretty well.
Music Man really seems to make great instruments.
Quality stuff.

and Monkeyshines

I used to think I was being indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...

Seems everyone is getting their muds wordled, I suppose a good pun (If there is such a thing) is it's own reword.
A pirate captain was standing in his treasure pile.
He lamented as his his booty was only shin-deep.
Now just last night a historian was here at the Tiki Bar
and conveyed this story:
In the days of old, when Genghis Kahn's men were running over Asia,
they set their sights on further shores. Rather than 'huns', thesewarriors were known as
Kahn's men, or simply, Kahns. When they hadconquered all the way to the water's edge,
they build boats, gatheredtheir loot, and bravely went to sea.
By a sad twist of fate, theyencountered an island of lepers,
which resulted in most of the crewbeing infected.
Hastily leaving that island, they set sail again,
butby the time they reached Ireland,
there wasn't much left of them.
Disembarking on stubby limbs, they set forth,
but were soon set upon bythe natives for the riches they carried.

Rotted away, but still quite clever,
they hid on the island and awaitedrescue,
and the locals never did get their hands on the treasure.

And that's how the story of the little people got started in Ireland
- the leper Kahn's and their pots of gold.
The Kahns were never fooled
by those who triedto trick them out of their pots of gold
by swapping them for an emptypot
- thus the saying: "You cannot change a leper's pots".

Drummers know the history involved with Gretsch drums and the players who chose to use them.

Some good drum articles here...
  1. Setting up your drum kit
  2. Your practice environment
  3. Practice,Practice,Practice

Sometimes drummers say they don't know what to practice.
Here is a list of items all drummers should address when practicing.

~ Stick control
~ Playing with a metronome (playing with, behind, and ahead)
~ Odd timing
~ Finger control
~ Left hand lead
~ Double bass drumming, even if it's not your style you should be able to do it.
Personally, the double pedal makes more sense economically than 2 kicks in terms of space and mics.
~ Fast tempos
~ Slow tempos
~ Odd groupings (3’s, 5’s’ 7’s and 9’s etc.)
~ Polyrhythms
~ Beat displacement and/or metric modulation
~ Shuffles
~ Showmanship (stick twirling, etc)
~ Creating your own patterns and ideas
~ Filling around accent patterns
~ Triplets around the set
~ 16th’s around the set
~ Left hand and foot isolation
~ Brush technique on the snare drum
~ Crash cymbal technique (which one to hit, when, how hard, etc.)
~ Two handed cymbal rides
~ Soloing
~ Recording yourself and listening back
~ All 40 drum rudiments
This is in addition to learning new songs
